Tithing on a small amount

שו”תCategory: HalachaTithing on a small amount
asked 1 year ago

Hello Rabbi,
Several questions on the same subject:

  1. Is it obligatory to set aside tithes on mint, sheba, etc.?
  2. If the answer to the previous question is yes, what happens if you pick a single mint sprig for a cup of tea? Do you excrete a small particle of the leaf?
  3. Further to this, what am I supposed to do regarding tithing when I pick one lemon from the tree?
  4. Do I need to pick a large enough amount for the discharge to be more significant?
  5. What would I do if we really gave the tithe to Levi? Give them a leaf? A slice of lemon?
  6. Since the fruits are left to rot anyway, is it legitimate/logical to take half-rotten fruit as the part that is excreted?

  1. See here: ttps://www.yeshiva.org.il/ask/423.
  2. yes.
  3. Exactly what you do with a large quantity.
  4. not.
  5. In principle, yes. You can collect and then give. There are methods that are less than a donation, but even there I don’t think the intention is that you can use it or throw it away. You have to give it to them.
  6. Yes, as long as there is fruit on it.
