To make a living from studying Torah

שו”תCategory: HalachaTo make a living from studying Torah
asked 5 years ago

Hello Rabbi!
Do you think it is permissible to make a living from studying Torah?
And is there justification, in your opinion, for the use of the phrase “It is time to do for the Lord…” in this regard? And if so, is it relevant to our generation?
Thank you very much!

Yes. Absolutely and without a doubt. The words of Maimonides are well-known, but in my opinion they do not concern us. Nowadays, all kinds of intellectuals make a living at the expense of the public, because the world has progressed and people understand the importance of engaging in the spiritual for the entire public. Then there would be no priesthood as an innkeeper. The problem is that with us, there is an entire public that makes a living from this (albeit barely and only as a stipend and not as a salary, which is simply just for the cancellation of time) and not just a select few who deserve it, and this is a crazy distortion of course. But we should not throw the baby out with the bathwater. See column 34.
