Tosafot and Rambam
Do you agree with this statement presented at Yair Farm in the name of the head’s response from the one who receives it?
That the sages of Tzarfit, who had Tosafot, were superior and greater than the Rambam?
It also appears in the Marshal’s Office and more. Of course not. There is no way to determine such a thing and there is no acceptance associated with it. With your honor, this is just nonsense.
Sometimes we see in the rules of jurisprudence that the authority given to the sages is essential. For example, the Tosafot write on Shabbat that he followed the rabbi of his friends because he was wiser, and so with Rabbi Yossi and Rabbi Yehuda versus Rabbi Shimon (with Rabbi Meir the problem is that his friends did not reach the end of his mind). Is there an attempt at such an argument here? And to put it another way, do you think the Tosafot fall short of the Rambam? Do you have similar opinions about different sages?
I don't think it's possible to make such sweeping statements, certainly not without familiarity but based on the compositions. These are different styles, and each one speaks to something.
Regarding the Talmudic statements, perhaps there was real familiarity there, or perhaps there is a completely glaring and distinct gap. Or maybe they too fell into the same fallacy as the sages of the generations that followed them.
The comparison between Maimonides and the Tosafot is
impossible because of the style of the writings
but it is perhaps possible to compare the Rabbi of Gash with the Tosafot, about whom Maimonides wrote in letters that he did not see anyone like.
The rumor in the name of the Chazon Ish that the authors of the Tosafot are greater than the Rabbi of Gash
Does the Rabbi believe so?
Did you decide to troll me? I said I don't do such measurements and that there's no point in them.
