Truth versus benefit
Hello Rabbi, I was arguing with a friend and thought I would direct the question to you. [The question is theoretical at the moment and does not concern practice].
The question arose following a (fairly common) phenomenon in which rabbis, for example, make inaccurate statements in the name of the Torah, knowingly, because it is beneficial. I will try to elaborate.
For example, regarding the conscription of women into the IDF, some say that they are violating a prohibition, even though they do not think so (we will not go into the halakhic question at this time, let’s assume that this is so). The reason for saying this is because they think that girls who join the army will ‘be spoiled’ (here too, let’s get into the realistic question, let’s assume that this is true).
I wanted to discuss the question from several angles, I will point out that the purely utilitarian aspect does not interest me. That is, let’s assume that it really would be useful and that by the age of one hundred and twenty she would remain a virgin and would never know that it was a lie, etc.
I would like to examine from the perspective of three matters: A. Halacha. Is someone who does this transgressing against the Law? on. Ethical. Does the Rabbi think that there is a violation of the value of truth (see the various cases of Lakman). third. Freedom. Is it right to harm (depending on the circumstances) those girls’ freedom to choose?
A. Let’s assume that those rabbis don’t have arguments that can convince those girls, but those rabbis are sure that it’s true. It’s clear to them that it will lead to corruption, etc., but those girls don’t know enough about reality, etc., and they won’t be convinced, or they’re ‘locked in’ to it.
on. Let’s assume that those rabbis have arguments that will surely convince the girls, but they have no way to convey it, for example through media, etc., to convey a long and complex message. Is it correct to say that here there is no longer a denial of their freedom?
Thank you very much.
