Yoav Sorek Religious Renewal and Column 130

Greetings and blessings, Rabbi Michi, I came across a new initiative from Yoav Sorek’s seminary, on religious-secular Jewish renewal.

It’s a bit up in the air, but I’m curious what the rabbi thinks about such a framework? The rabbi’s criticism of Amos Oz in column 130 touched on a much more secular approach and not committed to halakhah, but Sorek also talks about “secular Judaism.” And what is the difference between your approach and Sorek’s approach, if any? Are there any questions that you leave to the days of the Messiah/Sanhedrin and see this as an unchangeable reality as part of the ‘rules of the game’, or do you think that it is not necessary to stop the first-order halakhic ruling on all relevant questions? (Demanding halakhah from verses, and in particular the powers that the Sanhedrin has to shape halakhah in a direct and not convoluted and convoluted way)

Completely opposite initiatives. In my opinion, “secular Judaism” is an empty concept. A legend that has no relevant content and certainly not Jewish. In short, it’s just another attempt to define what someone thinks of as “Judaism.”

Thanks, what about the last question? Are there any questions that you leave to the days of the Messiah/Sanhedrin and see as an unchangeable reality as part of the ’rules of the game’ or do you think that it should not stop the first-order halachic ruling on all relevant questions? (Requirement of laws from verses, and in particular the powers that the Sanhedrin has to shape the halachic law in a direct manner and not in a convoluted and convoluted manner)

There is no question that should be left to the days of the Messiah. Any question that arises can be ruled upon, including sermons, etc. Without the Sanhedrin it would not be binding with formal authority, but there is substantive authority and if it is true then it is true. The problem is only with regard to changing existing laws. Not everything is possible here.
