Your opinion on studying mathematics

שו”תYour opinion on studying mathematics
asked 10 months ago

Hello, Michi. When it comes to reasoning, common sense, and philosophy, I am considered and consider myself to be significantly above average talent, however, in mathematics (after the first month of studying) I feel a lack of clarity and average understanding. Do you think it is reasonable to divide between these two areas and perhaps I am simply not talented in mathematics, or is it not possible to divide between the two, and the difference is hardly due to a lack of skill or something?
Thank you in advance.

I don’t know the answer to that. Obviously, there are different talents, one of which is not dependent on the others. But the fact that it’s hard for you doesn’t mean anything. It’s hard for everyone at first, and not just at first. You have to grit your teeth and not give up, and over time you’ll find out whether you have a talent for math or not.
One of the best pieces of advice I received from a friend before I went to study engineering was not to be alarmed by the fact that everyone understands but I don’t. He said that over time it would straighten out. I came after quite a few years of high school, which I didn’t study in either. And there were a lot of students in the class who had just recently graduated from high school and were also good students. Indeed, at the beginning of my studies, I felt like I was the only idiot who didn’t understand anything. After about a month, the big talker and “genius” among the students dropped out of school because he couldn’t stand it. This advice really saved me, and I offer it to anyone who is willing to listen.
