Q&A: Gentiles
Gentiles
Question
Hello Rabbi, I saw a lecture of yours where you spoke about gentiles today being much more civilized, etc., and not like they used to be… You also brought the story about the cats serving at a banquet, and then they threw them a mouse and they immediately showed who they really are. I want to ask the Rabbi: what are you relying on when you say they’re “basically okay”?
I’ve been living in New York for 20 years already, and I’m in daily contact with them, and I can tell you that they’re nice until something doesn’t sit well with them, and then they turn on you as if they never knew you at all—and that’s everyone, without exception… You immediately become “the Jew” and not Moshe from down the street. It’s always there in their subconscious, and those who supposedly support Jews—it’s a clear interest of their religion, not disinterested love. In short, they know very well when to show you that you’re a Jew.
As I understand it, what our Sages said is something essential: Esau hates Jacob, and not only in their time. It seems very simple to me to understand this—just throw them a mouse and you’ll see who they are…
I’m just throwing out my opinion here, that maybe the Rabbi should consider looking at the picture again. Have a peaceful Sabbath, Rabbi!
Answer
My impression is completely different, but I don’t live where you live. Jews can also turn on you. It’s true that there is an antisemitic element among gentiles, especially Christians, but that is not wickedness—it is a mindset. Bottom line, it is clear to me that gentiles today are good people, just like me and you.
