Eating unhealthy food

שו”תCategory: moralEating unhealthy food
asked 6 years ago

Hello Rabbi,
I would love to hear your opinion regarding the Halacha regarding eating foods known to be unhealthy for humans.
Does the law permit or prohibit eating them?
If you allow it, why?
And if you forbid it, how come most of us are infected with it?
In general, is it permissible for a person to harm themselves?
What is the difference between eating processed food and smoking cigarettes or even smoking drugs? Is it less harmful, and the destructive effect is not immediate? How much less harmful does it have to be for us to allow it?
It seems to me that this is a complex issue that, as I said, I would be happy to hear the rabbi give his opinion on from a halakhic/moral perspective.
This is worth a column.
Think about it..=)
thanks.

There is no clear line regarding health. There are different levels of unhealthiness, both in terms of the reliability of the information and in terms of the expected harm, so it is difficult to prohibit eating something that is not a deadly poison. To the same extent, you can ask whether it is permissible to go out into the street, and certainly to drive a car, without a necessary need (perhaps a “Pikon”). Things that a reasonable person does, the halakha does not fear. Some of the poskim have cited the verse “Shomer Pataiim G-d” in this regard.

Is smoking cigarettes allowed?

Again, it's hard to draw a sharp line. Is it one cigarette a day? A pack a day? Two? I don't know the answer to that. Highly not recommended.
