Frustration from Debate
I just watched the debate you had with Aviv from the theistic line.
As usual, I think you presented yourself accurately, with sharp intellectual ability and great taste. Even the modest main goal you took upon yourself to present only that belief in God is a rational option – brilliant. I think you definitely took the debate in stride.
However, that’s not what I wanted to point out. I wanted to vent – I’m not sure you have an appropriate response for what follows – I felt frustrated throughout the episode that Aviv – to my impression – didn’t really listen and hear the arguments you presented. Time after time after time he repeated himself, and didn’t really respond to your answers. You answered one, he pulled out two, three, four, then you started answering in order, and he went back to one again, then back to four and so on.
I’m not writing this to flatter you or to bring you ratings and a little satisfaction (although that’s also important). I’m wondering: Do you think there’s a reason for this sad phenomenon? People present themselves as rational and skeptical. So, why is it so hard for you to hear and respond properly? Why is there no response to the body of the arguments? What is there to be so afraid of? It’s clear that the speaker has decided ‘there is no God.’ And now, every argument presented to him is rejected out of hand. It’s strange.
Did you feel that way too? And I’m venting my accumulated frustration here. Time after time, in every debate (almost. Maybe there are some I haven’t seen) that I’ve had. People – some more and some less – fail at it.
So in conclusion, are you a partner in this? And if so, maybe you have an explanation for the phenomenon? Maybe tips on how this won’t happen again? And how do you repeatedly reach a debate like this, and not experience the same frustration.
That’s it. I unpacked.
[To conclude, I think that despite the aforementioned frustration, there is value in this. If only the listeners would notice this and decide what is more rational…]
Hello. Thank you.
Do you mean this: https://youtu.be/LVTmRwitEUI
It is human nature to entrench and defend one’s position. This is true for people of all stripes, believers and atheists, capitalists and socialists. It usually irritates us when someone who does this is in a position opposite to ours. Sometimes this is compounded by a lack of philosophical skill. And that is okay and happens on all sides.
I also agree with this.
Me too.
Is the Rabbi expecting or planning to write a post following the debate? Maybe to complete the picture? Reflections on these dialogues?
Best regards
not
It turns out that it is – https://mikyab.net/posts/82112
True. But what changed my mind was the insight into empiricism and not a desire to complete the debate (as was the case with Enoch).
