How much should one sacrifice for the sake of observing Halacha?
Let’s say I discover one day that I am a priest and that my wife was divorced before we got married. We live happily and have children. If I came to you and asked you what to do, would you tell me to break up the family and get a divorce immediately?
The background to the question is, of course, that in everyday life religion is not that burdensome to a person, sometimes it is even beneficial to him, it brings meaning to his life, and then it is easy to say that we believe that everything came from God and are obligated to His commandments. I am of course asking what is right to do, not what you will do. In addition, if someone were to consult me on a similar question in which by divorcing his wife he would save 1,000 people from death, let’s say, it would be easier for me to advise him to do so (although it is not certain that he is required to do so, but this is already a moral question). But here a small offense is at stake that does no harm to anyone.
