What is the Rabbi’s opinion on harming those not involved in war, intentionally or as collateral damage?
And how is it morally possible if, in order to protect ourselves, we kill tens of thousands, which in the most horrific scenarios will prevent dozens of individual deaths in the next ten years?
I have written my opinion many times. In my opinion, morally speaking, it is possible to kill everyone to the last if it is necessary for our own defense. Everyone has a persecutory law. Of course, one should not just harm those who are not involved if it is not necessary for achieving the goals. See my article on the defensive wall dilemma.
There is no meaning in measuring and comparing casualty numbers.
This is not relevant in collective persecutory law.
I understand that this is also a moral answer, not just a halakhic one.

I don't understand the question. If they thought he was a persecutor, then that's what they thought. Were they right? No.
