Q&A: Is Time Created?
Is Time Created?
Question
Hello!
I wanted to know: is time a created thing?
I heard that Einstein’s theory of relativity proves, or at least lends support to, the idea that time is created. Is that really so?
Has the Rabbi written about this anywhere?
Where can one read about this subject?
Answer
Greetings,
I haven’t written about this. But I am dealing with the subject of time in the current series of lectures in Petah Tikva. There are recordings on the site.
I do not think that the theory of relativity either supports or refutes the claim that time exists. If anything, the opposite is true (since within its framework space and time are dependent on the frame of reference).
Discussion on Answer
Apparently yes (I didn’t see what it was called here).
Actually, this past Sabbath I heard a lecture by Professor משה קוה who said emphatically that “time” as we know it now (following Einstein, etc.) proves that it was created and did not always exist.
He attacked (his friend) Hawking there over what he wrote in “A Brief History of Time.”
The truth is that in my opinion there were a few philosophical holes in his lecture. In general, he gave me the impression that he is very weak in the philosophical side of science.

If he said that, I disagree with him. Since he was my doctoral advisor, and indeed not every successful physicist is a successful philosopher. Hawking is another excellent example of this unfortunate fact.
Can the Rabbi write here briefly at least the reasons why, according to science, there is a tendency to say that time is not created?
I wrote it. According to the theory of relativity, time depends on the frame of reference, which implies that it is subjective. As stated, one may disagree, and in my opinion science has nothing to say about this topic.
Thank you.
Does the Rabbi mean the lecture series “Time in Jewish Law”?
