Q&A: Torah Study
Torah Study
Question
Hello Rabbi,
A few questions, if I may:
1. Is there a commandment of Torah study when a person doesn’t say the words aloud but only thinks them in his head? The issue isn’t clear to me.
2. When I study mentally in Chabad, I’m able lol to keep going much longer.
3. If one studies Torah in the object itself, such as a philosophy book for the sake of a Torah-related matter, then in order for it to count as Torah study I assume it’s not relevant to say the words aloud—what does the Rabbi say?
More generally, is the idea of saying the words aloud only for studying the books of the Torah?
Thank you very much.
Have a peaceful Sabbath
Answer
Why not? The question is whether one recites the blessing over Torah study for that, but study is study.
Discussion on Answer
I didn’t understand what wasn’t clear. I answered that in my opinion Torah study also counts without saying it aloud.
I understand.
Thank you very much
Hello Rabbi,
I didn’t completely understand what exactly the Rabbi was answering.
I can infer it, but since this is important I’d be glad if you could expand on the topic.
It’s just that I’m worried that if I don’t study with lip movement, it won’t count as the commandment of Torah study.
Many thanks,
