Q&A: Messiah
Messiah
Question
I’m enjoying the Rabbi’s series on messianism.
Is there a systematic survey of the different approaches regarding the coming of the Messiah—for example, whether the Messiah is a person or an idea,
whether the Messiah has already come, will come, or never will come,
and whether it’s possible to present a contradiction-free picture in which the Messiah is nothing more than the hope left in Judaism’s Pandora’s box, and in fact the waiting is in vain? (The Talmud brought post-Hezekiah prophecies as a counter to Rabbi Hillel, who said that they already “consumed him” in the days of Hezekiah—interesting whether he was tasty.)
Maybe the Rabbi discussed this in the second book, but I still haven’t merited to get there yet. (Apparently not only God plays dice, but I do too.)
Thank you very much
Answer
I don’t engage in surveys of different approaches on any topic.
You can see an analysis (not a survey of approaches) in my daughter’s work on the subject.
Thank you, Rabbi. I know the Rabbi doesn’t deal with that. I thought maybe the Rabbi knows of something like that done by others. Could I get a link or a reference to an article?
