Several Questions

Question

Hello and blessings. A few questions that I was asked.

A. I am a student in a junior yeshiva. I went to be tested for acceptance at a certain yeshiva, a very highly regarded yeshiva, and they told me that if I came to the yeshiva it would not be good for me, because I already have a different analytical approach that does not fit the yeshiva’s approach.

B. I would appreciate it if the Rabbi would define for me what analytical Talmud study in yeshivot is. Does it have to be done through later authorities (Acharonim), and if so, which stream does this more [that is, works more with later authorities]?

C. What is the Rabbi’s opinion about the analytical study found at Har Hamor Yeshiva and about that yeshiva’s approach?

Answer

A. I cannot answer such a question. The fact that you are used to one approach does not mean that you cannot learn in another way. On the contrary, it may enrich you more. But it is possible that a certain approach is not suitable for a particular student.
B. For that you would need an encyclopedia, and this is not the place. In my opinion it is definitely important to engage with the later authorities (Acharonim), but in the end each person is supposed to learn in his own way.
C. I do not know them well enough. But as far as I know, they do not have a unique analytical method. They follow the ways of the main Lithuanian yeshivot.
