The Niddah Campaign
Question
In recent days, a story was publicized saying that women (secular women) shared that they observe the laws of niddah in exchange for money. Does Judaism have anything to say about this?
Answer
In my opinion, no.
I, the insignificant one, of distinguished rabbinic lineage, can point to 2 problems.
1. They supposedly shared what goes on in their lives, and in many people’s eyes that is considered something important or interesting.
But when it became known that they were paid large sums for this by the Libaiv family foundation, the public was disgusted and felt they’d been duped for the sake of religion.
2. It supposedly appears that it is proper and worthwhile to observe niddah because it is a Torah commandment, but they don’t say that there is an additional week that is not actually from the Torah at all.
And it is presented as if it’s fun and renewing.
But that may be true for the days of menstruation, whereas with the addition of another week it is very difficult and brings heaps of betrayal, sorrow, and divorce.
