Q&A: Torah Study
Torah Study
Question
Hello Rabbi,
How can the obligation of Torah study be quantified? In other words, how much time per day is one obligated to study (as a yeshiva student)? And what is one also required to study?
I would also appreciate an explanation of why yeshivot invest so much in studying the Talmud if it is only theoretical and does not come into practical application.
Answer
It cannot be quantified. One should try as much as possible. That is all.
Torah study is not study of what to do in practice. Therefore your question does not arise in the first place.
Discussion on Answer
There is no need to explain the obvious. He asks why the focus is not on study for practical application, and I answered that the question is flawed from the outset, since it assumes something incorrect (identifying study with practical, applicable conclusions). That is all. No one here asked what Torah is or what its definition is.
To define something by negation—through what it is not—is not a definition.
And therefore this answer does not provide the explanation the questioner is asking for.
