Q&A: Will God forgive me for being an atheist?
Will God forgive me for being an atheist?
Question
In lesson 41 of the faith series, you said that although it may be that I am mistaken in being Jewish and not Christian, God will not punish me for that, because it is impossible to examine all the alternatives over the course of my life. My question is whether, in your opinion, it is worth investing so much energy and shaping an entire life path according to a theory when there is a very reasonable chance that in the end I will simply be exempt because I followed it. After all, the argument that “everyone should go according to their own reasoning” is not really convincing here, when there are billions of other people who also went according to their own reasoning and are one hundred percent sure they are right, so apparently there are distortions we do not notice.
It can be asked in a simpler way: if I go up to Heaven and tell God that I took into account that there was a high probability I would make a mistake in the path I chose, and therefore I chose not to observe anything at all—wouldn’t I then also be exempt?….
Answer
I don’t know what you would be exempt from. But the reason to serve God is not fear of punishment, but rather the obligation to act in the true way. Therefore, you should do what seems reasonable to you. Claims about guilt are only arguments for mitigation of punishment.
