Q&A: Torah Study
Torah Study
Question
Hello Rabbi, I’m currently studying tractate Shabbat, and I’m learning a whole page devoted to which sins of ours cause things in our lives to happen…(for example: because of the sin of vows, children die, and the like). My question is: with pages like these and others similar to them, where I find it very hard to accept the assumptions of our Sages and their conclusions—and even if we assume that everything they say is true, it doesn’t interest me and I don’t feel that it advances me—is there still fulfillment here of the commandment of Torah study? And also, how am I supposed to relate to their words? Should I assume that what they say is correct (because they are confident in themselves and even bring supports and sources), or is everything open to criticism?
Answer
I have the same doubt regarding all aggadic passages and other things that are not Jewish law.
