Q&A: The Revelation at Mount Sinai
The Revelation at Mount Sinai
Question
Hello Rabbi. This is a somewhat worn-out question, but it bothers me. I’ve read many books on faith, and in almost all of them they talk about the tradition and transmission from our ancestors of the testimony regarding the Revelation at Mount Sinai as the thing on which all faith is based, and as something very solid to rely on. But I never understood what the x-factor is—what gives the tradition about the Revelation at Mount Sinai and the Exodus from Egypt historical validity? That is, why think at all that these events really took place as they were transmitted to us? And also, what are the characteristics of this tradition that distinguish it from the traditions of other religions regarding the fundamentals of their faith, and that give it grounded credibility unlike those other traditions?
