Q&A: Derashot of the Sages
Derashot of the Sages
Question
Hi Rabbi, in my effort to understand the derashot of the Sages, I find that most of the books written on the subject explain only the thirteen hermeneutical principles of Rabbi Yishmael. They are more logical and somewhat easier to understand. I am trying to understand the other types of derashot (known by some as the Rabbi Akiva type). Other than the Malbim, which books would you recommend?
Answer
Hi, I can recommend a few recent books by Rabbi Yitzhak Sheilat:
In the Ascending Path — a series dealing with scriptural derashot and the sources of the Jewish laws. So far, volumes have appeared on the tractates Sanhedrin, Makkot, Sotah, Gittin, Berakhot, Rosh Hashanah, and Kiddushin.
