Q&A: Providence
Providence
Question
Regarding your claim about God's providence in the world.
Why is it not the case that in the Book of Judges it is shown that even according to natural conduct, it is evident that the relationship to observance of the commandments does in fact affect physical victory?
Likewise, there are verses that indicate God's intervention in the world, such as: "The king's heart is in the hand of the Lord; He turns it wherever He wishes."
And if so, why shouldn't we say that a God who indeed demands commandment observance from His creatures intervenes frequently, certainly on the national level?
This also affects the attitude toward rabbis, because surely if God influences things and at the very least cares for us, then it is understandable to examine the idea of "they will tell you that right is left" (as the Rabbi acknowledged regarding the Sanhedrin), and the continuation of the Jewish people did grant ordination to the rabbinate throughout the generations, and this is brought in the Talmud; and nowadays too, go out and see who these great Torah leaders of the generation are in fear of Heaven and in halakhic commitment, and of course in their religious knowledge and their rootedness in their traditions—and it's astonishing that one arrives at Conservative Judaism.
Isn't it the will of God, who cares for us, that we should act this way in accordance with that religion He chose?
One can refer to those "great ones" who utter only nonsense, despite the admission that they are not of low intelligence… but a more plausible explanation, after reading the Book of Judges—maybe these are simply souls with certainty that God brought down into the world in order ultimately to balance the practical action. For one cannot expect a person to go against everything known to us and the lofty things you have received, when he is aware of his limitations with respect to understanding practical matters and the divine commandments.
Answer
Your wording is very sloppy, and it's hard to understand what you want and what you're referring to. You are also describing a position that is not mine, at least not precisely. Therefore I can't address the questions.
- I didn't understand what the Book of Judges has to do with this. I have explained more than once that the Holy One, blessed be He, changed His policy regarding His involvement in the world. In the Torah there are quite a few verses that indicate intervention, and I don't know why you need the Book of Judges or a verse like "The king's heart is in the hand of the Lord," etc. There is the section of "And it shall come to pass, if you surely listen," the hardening of Pharaoh's heart, the ten plagues, the splitting of the sea, speaking with the prophets, and much more.
- I didn't understand what is supposed to be said regarding observance of the commandments. The sentence is unclear.
- How did you get to rabbis and Conservatism and all the rest? What's the connection? What are you even writing here?
