Bar Mitzvah boy

שו"תBar Mitzvah boy
שאל לפני 3 שנים

Hello Rabbi,
I started teaching a secular boy his Bar Mitzvah (part one of Vaicha) and the family wanted to have the event at the Western Wall on Thursday and invite the entire extended family. I now found out that his Hebrew date would be on Friday, but it would be a problem to tell the family to move the time and place of the event.
From a halachic perspective, is it possible for a boy to go to the Torah the day before he is a Bar Mitzvah? What about the blessings of the Torah, and "Blessed is He who exempts me from the punishment of this one."?

It depends on the customs. In the Shulchan Aruch, the Gemara rules that if everyone reaches the minyan of seven, including a small one, then there is no problem in raising him to the Torah. This is how Rabbi Ovadia ruled, who reaches the minyan of seven. Ashkenazim practice differently, but in my opinion there is no reason to do so where necessary. If it is possible for there to be three callers besides him, that is even better, but not necessary. Baruch Shapatrani is not really a blessing, it is a ceremony and can be said whenever you want.
