How does monotheism fit in with free choice?
When we greet "Shim Shalom" we are essentially asking God to program our brains to be at peace.
How did it work out for you in the past when you believed in private providence (he who prays for peace may get what he wants), and
Even by free choice?
If the One who sits on high programs the mind to be at peace, what free choice do I have?

It's really not difficult. Like anything, God can change the relative weight in our minds, and tilt it more toward peace. Everyone has a choice, but with unbalanced weights. We ask Him to give us different conditions for choice. Such as a request for fear of God, for assistance in making repentance, for a marriage, and many more things of our own choosing.
