Regarding the question of why the lead heart cracked: aside from the fact that this is a literary play on words, since the cold is not physical but emotional (or, in an unclear way, perhaps both), in my opinion on the philosophical level the poet meant to say that the true perception of reality is the way human beings perceive it, and not material nature. That is, the moment the bird died because of the winter, then his heart really did crack, because the cold really was severe then, since it affected the psychological state. And it is no coincidence that the forces of darkness are compared to cold and darkness, and the forces of good to light and warmth.
