Q&A: Should people seek Torah from his mouth?
Should people seek Torah from his mouth?
Question
There is someone who instructs the public not to be careful about coronavirus. [He apparently thinks that because he knows a lot of Torah, he is wiser than all the experts and professionals in the field? Or that the merit of his Torah, or of his rabbi, will help even if he is mistaken?]
And indeed, because of his terrible judgment, many were infected, God forbid.
The Talmud says that if the rabbi is like an angel of the Lord of Hosts, people should seek Torah from his mouth; and if not, then not.
Someone who, with a wave of his mouth, apparently caused great harm and even, it seems, death among the Jewish people—we have not heard that he repented.
Is it permitted to learn Torah from him?
Answer
It is permitted to learn Torah from anyone, except that one should relate critically to the Torah one learns. And in fact, that is always true.
