Q&A: Is creativity something with a mystical component or not?
Is creativity something with a mystical component or not?
Question
I watch stand-up comedians who improvise out of seemingly nothing—really brilliant and very “powerful” improvisations that presumably have never been said anywhere in the world since it was created. And sometimes they improvise many such bits in a single performance. And I ask myself: where do these inventions come from? Does the human brain really have the ability to “create” things out of nothing with such speed and such originality? And if not, is there something mystical / spiritual involved? And why does it seem to come so easily for some people and not for others? I think the significant component in creativity is inborn, and less something that can be developed.
Answer
The term “mystical” is not well-defined. Our own insights are also mystical in the sense that we have no way to arrive at them systematically. In my view, that is not mysticism but part of our intellectual capacity. The same is true of artistic or other kinds of creation, and the same is true of stand-up.
