Q&A: The Meeting of the Alter Rebbe and the Vilna Gaon
The Meeting of the Alter Rebbe and the Vilna Gaon
Question
Why did the Blessed Name prevent the Alter Rebbe, Rabbi Shneur Zalman of Liadi, founder of the glorious Chabad Hasidic movement and author of the Shulchan Arukh HaRav, from meeting with the Vilna Gaon?
Surely then he would presumably have explained Hasidism to the Vilna Gaon, and even if the Vilna Gaon had disagreed with the content, in any case he certainly would have accepted that their intentions and hearts were directed toward Heaven, and then this bitter dispute would have disappeared at its root.
And it is known in the name of the Alter Rebbe that if he had succeeded in meeting with the Vilna Gaon, he would have convinced him of the truth and sweetness of Hasidism.
Answer
A wonderful question. In truth, the entire loss was the Vilna Gaon’s. When I get to the heavenly court, I’ll try to find out.
