Q&A: The Boycott of Angel
The Boycott of Angel
Question
Regarding the Angel bakery:
I don’t agree with this boycott.
Since just as the Haredim show contempt for Ben-Gurion and Esther Hayut and all the secular public figures, and in the eyes of the Haredim it is completely legitimate to demonstrate outside Aharon Barak’s house, in the same way it seems legitimate to me that secular people demonstrate out of the depths of their hearts about the things that matter to them and that they believe in.
In principle, the issue of enlistment in the IDF really is one of the most sacred issues for the average secular person, and at first glance it is not clear why the Haredim evade service. Rabbi Edelstein is the leader who keeps telling the Haredim not to enlist but to study Torah, so in my opinion it is completely understandable that a classic secular person would demonstrate outside the home of the rabbi who harms equality.
I’m not getting into the question of whether the Haredim contribute or whether the army needs them. Even if we assume it doesn’t need them, for example,
if we accept that they truly believe there is injustice here and that it genuinely pains them (and I believe them that it really bothers them because of the lack of justice in it), then it is completely legitimate for them to demonstrate outside the house of the leading rabbinic authority of the generation.
After all, the Haredi public also has no secular figure about whom it says, “This is too far.” The Haredim hold in contempt anyone who does not keep the commandments, like for example Rabbi Ovadia, who said about the Supreme Court justices that they are “men who have relations with menstruating women” — a very flattering expression. Or Rabbi Shach, who delivered the “rabbits speech” and offended many secular people.
So they should not demand that a secular person who is not traditional show respect for their great rabbis.
So an honest Haredi should not boycott.
What do you think?
Answer
You discuss this as if there is some serious claim here on someone’s part. But it is obvious that this is tactical offense-taking. Does anyone really imagine that there was anything improper here? This is just a common Haredi tactic, like Muslims who take offense in order to try to extract consideration and gains from their surroundings. Rank-and-file Haredim really are fools who buy these manipulations, and some of them even take them seriously. That is the inevitable result of brainwashing and living in a bubble.
