Question
To Rabbi Michael Abraham,
Today there are LED lamps that are fundamentally different from the incandescent bulbs of the past. People who know the subject have told me that although this involves electricity, LED is not at all comparable to ordinary electricity. If so, why is it that, as far as I know, the attitude of contemporary halakhic decisors toward LED lamps has remained as though they were the old incandescent bulbs? Hasn’t the time come to change the Jewish law on this issue?

Answer
In my opinion, no, because electricity is forbidden under the category of building, and then there is no difference. According to the view that it is kindling, the prohibition is indeed different (though they still maintain that it should be forbidden rabbinically for various reasons, such as creating something new).
