Q&A: Prayer for Rain
Prayer for Rain
Question
Rabbi, I just finished reading the chapter on parallel planes of explanation (That Which Exists and Does Not Exist, Gate 4, Chapter 3), and I came away a bit confused. In the Rabbi’s view, does rain fall because we perform commandments, or because of a deterministic physical process? And if they are connected (a global correspondence), does the Rabbi really think that in a year when the rain falls in its proper time, the Jewish people are in excellent spiritual shape and observing the commandments, and if the following year it does not fall in its proper time, then the Jewish people have apparently gone back to their bad ways?
Answer
I think that at least nowadays, rain falls because of climatic conditions, unrelated to commandments. And there is no global connection between the planes (there I only pointed to the possibility of such a connection).
