Q&A: The Teaching of Kabbalah
The Teaching of Kabbalah
Question
Have a good week,
I wanted to ask how the many halakhic contradictions between the revealed Torah and the hidden Torah can be reconciled, since they seem, at least on the face of it, like two different Torahs, Heaven forbid.
A well-known example is the prohibition against shaving the beard according to Kabbalah, as opposed to the permission for it according to the revealed tradition.
Answer
1. I don’t think there are many contradictions. The example you gave is not a contradiction. A contradiction is when Jewish law forbids something and Kabbalah requires it, or vice versa. In the case of the beard, Kabbalah is simply more stringent than the law. The idea of being stringent and forbidding what is technically permitted also exists within Jewish law itself. True, here and there there are contradictions (such as the orientation of the bed), and about this the Magen Avraham wrote in the laws of tefillin that when there is a contradiction between Jewish law and Kabbalah, one should follow the law. But of course he wrote this as a halakhic decisor. As far as I know, most kabbalists do the opposite (see the Talmudic Encyclopedia, entry “Halakhah”).
2. And even if these are two Torahs, why is that "Heaven forbid"? There can be mistakes in Kabbalah, since its sources are not clear. I understand that you assume it was given at Sinai, and I very much doubt that. My impression (which is not well founded) is that these are mystical intuitions of people with mystical abilities (those among them who are not charlatans). Those intuitions may certainly have value, but that does not mean they were given at Sinai, or even that they are based on principles that were given at Sinai (like Jewish law).
Discussion on Answer
I don’t have a clear position on the matter. Maybe yes, maybe no.
Thank you very much for the quick reply (to both questions..)
In this context, what is your opinion about all the stories of various revelations that are reported by great Torah sages whom we do in fact hold in high regard, both them and their Torah, starting from the early generations of Tannaim and Amoraim, and including the testimony of Maran the Beit Yosef regarding the maggid that revealed itself to him?
Thank you very much.
