Q&A: Gezerah Shavah
Gezerah Shavah
Question
Hello Rabbi, I read an article from Middah Tovah on the Torah portion Chayei Sarah about the gezerah shavah for the betrothal of a woman by money. The conclusion the Rabbi reached is that the gezerah shavah (taking-taking) comes to teach us that creating metaphysical bonds requires an act of acquisition, and in this case that acquisition is the giving of money. According to this, any other way of betrothing a woman (a document or intercourse) would also have to be defined as an acquisition, but it does not seem that the Talmud makes an effort to call the other modes of betrothal an acquisition, only money.
Answer
I didn’t understand. The Mishnah speaks about three ways in which a woman is "acquired": money, a document, and intercourse.
