Q&A: The Nature of the Good Is to Do Good
The Nature of the Good Is to Do Good
Question
Rabbi, why do we start with the assumption that God is good? It could be that God wants to create evil, and that is why there is evil. After all, to say that God cannot create evil is to deny His infinity. Why do we keep feeling compelled to say that God is good?
Answer
There was once a discussion here about the source for saying that He is good.
But as for your question: denying Him something that would make Him imperfect—and assuming that evil is not perfection—does not deny His omnipotence. Just as it is reasonable to say that He cannot turn Himself into a human being, because otherwise I could shoot Him in the head and He would die (which would contradict the necessity of His existence). And if He would not die, then He did not become a human being (because a human who is shot dies).
