Interpreting Differently
Question
When you reach the conclusion that the Holy One, blessed be He, does not control actions that depend on human choice, are you then obligated to try to interpret differently the rabbinic sources in which we see active providence? Wouldn’t it be more useful and straightforward to say: “True, they thought that the Holy One, blessed be He, controls everything, but that was a mistaken belief with no basis after a logical analysis from the 21st century. They were simply wrong, and that’s not so terrible—so what happened?”
Answer
Absolutely. And I have done that as well. For example, regarding the Mishnah and Talmudic passage about a vain prayer.
