Q&A: What Is Torah?
What Is Torah?
Question
Nedarim 49b: "Rav Chisda said that he would ask those refined people of Huzal: This porridge, what is the best way to eat it? Wheat porridge with wheat bread and barley porridge with barley bread, or perhaps wheat porridge with barley bread and barley porridge with wheat bread? Rava ate it with roasted grain. Rabbah bar Rav Huna found Rav Huna eating porridge with his fingers. He said to him: Why is the Master eating with his hand? He said to him: Thus said Rav: Porridge is tasty with one finger, all the more so with two, and all the more so with three." In the Rabbi's opinion, does someone who sits and studies only this passage fulfill the commandment of Torah study? And if the answer is yes, in what sense is this called Torah?
Answer
In my opinion, no. But in my view all aggadic passages are not Torah study (except perhaps in the sense of the person). I think one should not recite the blessing over Torah study on aggadic passages.

Search here on the site for “Torah in the person” as opposed to “Torah in the object.” For example, here: https://mikyab.net/%D7%A9%D7%95%D7%AA/%D7%94%D7%91%D7%97%D7%A0%D7%94-%D7%91%D7%99%D7%9F-%D7%AA%D7%95%D7%A8%D7%94-%D7%91%D7%97%D7%A4%D7%A6%D7%90-%D7%95%D7%AA%D7%95%D7%A8%D7%94-%D7%91%D7%92%D7%91%D7%A8%D7%90
What do you mean by “perhaps in the sense of the person”? I didn’t understand.
