Can or cannot be reduced

שו"תCan or cannot be reduced
שאל לפני 7 שנים

Peace and blessings.
Following the study of the issue of whether or not reduction is possible, in Genesis 17 (and in many other places), I am interested in knowing how science, or the philosophy of science, relates to this question today.
Can two things happen at exactly the same time? If not, why not?
If so, is there a way to measure and prove that they happened at exactly the same time?
All these questions are also about measuring distances or dimensions – is it possible for two things to be exactly the same length? If not, why? If so, is it possible to measure and prove that they are exactly the same length?
And from all of the above – what does this say about the essence of time, or the essence of distance?
Thank you very much.

Hello Rabbi Yuki. Mathematically, there is no chance of a limited event within a continuous collection of values (its probability is 0). Therefore, in science and mathematics, we do not speak in such a language but in the language of segments: What is the chance that the difference in lengths between A and B will be up to epsilon? At a discrete point (such as epsilon = 0) there is only a probability density and not a chance. The chance of obtaining a certain length from a continuous set of values is described by a distribution function that describes probability densities as a function of length. The chance of a certain length is not defined (but its density is). The chance is obtained by the integral of the function over the segment in question. For example, the chance that a certain length will be X can be described by the function (f(X). The chance that the value of X will be between 11 and 37 is the integral of the function between 11 and 37. At a discrete point (e.g. X=15) the chance is 0, and only a probability density is defined for it. This means that time and distance are continuous (i.e. can take on any value over a continuous segment).
