I read the Rabbi's fascinating and successful column on the state of philosophy today and on the French in particular. I personally tried to read Levinas' book "Totalities and Infinity," which sounds quite explosive and profound, but I couldn't really understand what he was saying. On the other hand, one of the well-known French thinkers is Michel Foucault, who is considered a guru in the postmodern world and is usually associated with a school called "structuralism," which is currently considered an important current in philosophy, social sciences, anthropology, and even linguistics (speaking of Noam Chomsky, who is also usually associated with this school; see the book "Structuralism" by Jean Piaget, who is also French). Is the Rabbi's criticism also directed at these people and why? Also, how does the Rabbi explain the enormous influence of a philosopher like Derrida on human thinking and on issues like moral relativism, etc., despite the fact that according to Rabbi Gottfried Empty of content?
Thank you very much.

Derrida's influence is not philosophical. Shakespeare also influenced the world in the sense that he provoked insights and attitudes in people. There is a postmodern mood that is evoked by contentless texts that infuse this atmosphere. See my lecture here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UEhGAutVypI In my opinion, Chomsky's structuralism is nothing more than a name-sharing with that of Foucault and his gang. And by the way, as Chomsky wrote in the above passage, Foucault is an exception among the French, as there are several claims in his words that contain points of view. In hermeneutics, structuralism is a different school from Derrida's decoconstruction, and to some extent the opposite (his method has interpretive truth, but it does not lie in the author but in the text that is shaped by the environment and other factors that invest it with various structures). And what is considered an important stream in the branches you mentioned does not necessarily mean anything, since they are full of worthless and tasteless material. See Baturi 178-184.
