Hypercausality

שו"תHypercausality

Hello Rabbi!
I wanted to ask whether there is a logical problem of hypercausality, meaning that when event x happens, it causes event y and when event e happens, it also causes event y. When event x and event e happen together at the same time, can it be said that each of them caused y independently?

This is just semantics. You can say yes or no. It depends on the meaning you give to the term "cause". Halacha also discusses this, the issue of force and desire (a person who forces himself to do something he wants to do no matter what). See Anzit on "force", and the things are ancient. I think I dealt with this in one of the columns (and I also cited the Gemara regarding "for the sake of Pesach" and "for the sake of all" in the intentions of the sacrifice).
