There is no obligation to obey anyone. The Mera Da'Tara has authority over the community that accepted him and those who belong to it. The status of the great men of the generation is, as is well known, controversial (who are the great men of the generation), but even without this, I am not aware of any halakhic source that gives a different status to the great men of the generation (except perhaps in mourning for them, who are all considered their disciples), and there is no obligation to "not deviate" except with regard to the Sanhedrin. There is none today. Of course, there is a point that if a TA says something, there is a good chance that he is right, and therefore it is worth considering his words, and perhaps even obeying. But this is not a formal obligation of obedience. It is like a specialist doctor, who is not obligated to obey, but it makes sense to obey him because he is an expert.
