Losing money for lighting a Hanukkah candle on time

שו"תLosing money for lighting a Hanukkah candle on time
שאל לפני 3 שנים

I work for a living at a place that allows me flexibility and early departure on Hanukkah. But if I leave every day on Hanukkah to light the candles on time, I will lose a significant amount of money in the aggregate. I can light them at about 7 o'clock, when the market has not yet finished its work. The option of my wife lighting them for me is irrelevant to us. Am I obligated to leave work a few hours earlier than usual, in order to light the Hanukkah candles at home on time?

In my opinion, absolutely not. Nowadays, the ritual of leaving the market is certainly later, and therefore some jurists have written that initially it is possible to light the blessing later. Although the issue of Zerezin Mkdimin remains, in my understanding this does not require a financial loss. And even if there is a compromise in this, it is certainly not necessary to spend more than a third on the mitzvah (meaning a third of the cost of the mitzvah, and not a third of your salary), as is advisable in B.K. 9b.
