Choose to believe

First, it is clear that a person has discretion when forming opinions on various issues. And I already discussed in column 35 the connection between discretion (on the intellectual level) and choice (on the ethical level). But to be honest, I really think this command as a simple matter is devoid of logical logic. I cannot be commanded not to believe something. If after my own consideration the conclusion is that fact X is true, I cannot be commanded to think that X is not. This is absurd. Therefore, in my opinion, the meaning of this command is that I must not decide as long as I do not have certainty, but to have a sense of humor. The meaning of a sense of humor is not only behavioral but also intellectual: it is reasonable and therefore you will fear it (because it is probably true), but do not decide with certainty because you really do not have certainty. We have a tendency to decide with certainty bad things about a person, when in fact there is room for different interpretations. The command only tells me to maintain common sense. This is similar to the command to judge every person according to their merits, as Rabbi Yonah and the Maimonides also interpret the Mishnah in the Avos, which states that one should follow common sense.
