Stable philosophical ground

שו"תStable philosophical ground
שאל לפני 4 שנים

Hello,
For a long time now I have been unable to land on solid philosophical ground. I will explain what I mean.
I cannot claim to be a great expert in philosophy, but I am familiar with the basic ideas of key thinkers.
The more I learn, the more I feel the futility of learning, like grinding water. I mean, of course the learning itself matures and the learner himself matures towards a more solid philosophical position, but in my case it just doesn't feel that way.
The further I go chronologically along the philosophical timeline, the more I feel like we are doomed not to know. I was particularly deeply impressed by the ideas of thinkers like Nietzsche, Freud, and Schopenhauer, and then the post-structuralists (and of course similar ideas in the East).
I have come to the point where I feel that choosing a moral or ideological position is a matter of convenience or aesthetics and nothing more. Every position we hold is merely a comfortable illusion, which we hold simply because it helps maintain a certain stability.

I would appreciate advice.
Thank you, Harel.

I have no advice beyond what I wrote in my book. A person has nothing but their intuitions. If you don't accept that then you are a skeptic and I have nothing to say to skeptics. In my opinion, most of the philosophers' words are really empty water mills. Studying philosophy is going through the positions of different thinkers like a museum of positions, many of which don't really mean anything and are not distinguishable from other positions, nor are they based on arguments. Therefore, on issues that seem important to you, formulate your own position, and don't pay attention to what these or others have written. If there are arguments, of course, it is important to examine them. But the fact that people have expressed different positions shouldn't change anything for you.
