Study, proficiency, and repetition in Talmud Torah

שו"תStudy, proficiency, and repetition in Talmud Torah
שאל לפני 10 שנים

In the Seder Bekiot, I study to cover a tractate and try to repeat each page of Gemara with Rashi and certain Tosafot three more times to go back and mark "V" on each page so that I know that I have more or less learned it thoroughly and also so that if I want to finish the tractate I can know where I stand. Usually, I don't get to repeat each page like that again. One of my friends told me that it really bothers him to see me studying Torah like that because it seems to him as if I am studying in order to mark "V" on each page and move on – instead of simply studying and repeating as much as necessary without being preoccupied with marking. I explained to him that I have no choice because there is a doubt that must be met and every page deserves to be repeated and sometimes that is the price of a Seder Bekiot, but he didn't accept that. What does the rabbi think about that?

Obviously, the goal is to remember. But endless repetition is very difficult, and our psyche is complex. Therefore, in my opinion, there is no problem with marking goals technically. Personally, I prefer not to study proficiency at all. If you study by reference, you remember better, even without repetition.
