vegetarianism

שו"תvegetarianism
שאל לפני 4 שנים

I talked to a vegetarian and he claimed to me that I was immoral.
Just as it is immoral to harm another person just like that, to hurt a person without them having done anything to you, it is also unjust and immoral to hurt an animal and kill it in order to use its skin or eat it. A. Am I immoral?
B. What good answer can I give him? Why is it okay and moral to hurt an animal, kill it, and then eat it?
thanks.

If you cause suffering to an animal, it is truly immoral (and also forbidden by halakhic law). Consuming animal products indirectly helps the industry that abuses them and uses the products of a crime. In the case of great need, when there is no choice, then of course animals are also used, even if they are caused suffering (and there should be some proportion between the need and the level of suffering. Bullfighting or cockfighting do not seem to me to be a significant need). The question is whether consuming animal food is such a need or not. In any case, it is clear that those who refrain from it are of a greater order, even if the person who consumes it is not considered an actual criminal.
