What to learn from a convert

שו"תWhat to learn from a convert
שאל לפני 4 שנים

Hello Rabbi. A friend from work, a traditionalist, decided to "get stronger" after his father's death. He and his wife started observing Shabbat, and he wants to set up a group with me once or twice a week to study Torah. He also feeds off the website and Torah readings of the Hidabrot organization, if you know the style.
He is not an educated person, nor has he sat down and studied anything since graduating from a vocational college. He knows almost nothing about Torah matters.
I am a yeshiva graduate, I know a book.
I'm really, really confused about what to study with him. Torah, Gemara, Laws, your trilogy 🙂
How do you start? Have you had any experience with a case like this?

Both in terms of the substance of the matter and in terms of the learner's approach and interest, I am in favor of studying Gemara. This is the essence of everything and is the most important. Forget all the surrounding nonsense. In my experience, this is usually also the most effective study. Along with this, it is worth advancing in the study of laws so that he knows how to behave correctly. After he acquires proficiency in Gemara, it is also worth showing him the connection between Gemara and practical laws. This strengthens the point.
