Animal cruelty

שו"תAnimal cruelty
שאל לפני 6 שנים

Hello Rabbi.
In the animal food industry (meat, fish, eggs, and milk), as we know, there is a lot of animal cruelty in our time. The form of farming is different today, and is aimed at extracting maximum financial profit from animals.
From a halachic perspective, it is known that exploiting animals for profit is not prohibited, and as long as the person is not "just" abusing them, there is no offense in this.
My question: Is it possible, from a halakhic perspective, to limit it, and say that there is a certain amount of reasonable suffering, and that suffering that is not proportionate would be prohibited even for the sake of benefit? If so, would it be possible to halakhically prohibit the form of industry in our time.
I am only asking for halachically based reasons, not moral reasons (if there is an expansion elsewhere, I would be happy for you to point it out to me).
Thank you very much and good night.

I don't know how to provide reasons beyond common sense (proportionality). Even if I give you sources and precedents, they will be based on common sense. Therefore, I don't understand what you expect? There are several rabbis who have written such principles (for example, regarding fattening geese), but as mentioned, I don't see what is important in their words beyond my understanding. I just remembered something. In the Bible, it says that a rabbi was sentenced to 13 years of torment because he did not have mercy on a calf that was destined for slaughter. And he urges the reader to understand that they sentenced him only because he did not feel mercy in his heart. Simply put, it was sentenced because he did not refrain from slaughtering it.
