Tales of Gilgamesh
What do you think about the slightly suspicious correspondence between the stories of Noah and the flood and the stories of the Epic of King Gilgamesh found in the Mesopotamian region and dating back to around 2,100 BCE?
"Gilgamesh asks Atenpishtim to tell him how he received eternal life from the gods, and Atenpishtim grants his request and tells him the story of the flood. According to him, the gods, led by Anu and Enlil, decided to bring a flood into the world. The god Aa told Atenpishtim about the plan, ordered him to build a large ship and put 'the seed of the soul of every living thing' on it, and to tell the people of his city that he must leave, but not to tell about the approaching flood. Atenpishtim does as he is commanded and even receives help from the people of his city. He puts his family, property, craftsmen, and the soul of every living thing on the ship. A fierce storm breaks out according to the gods' plan, which lasts six days and subsides on the seventh day. The ship rests on the summit of Mount Nitsir, and seven days later Atenpishtim sends a dove, which cannot find rest and returns. Following this, he sends a swallow, which also returns, and finally sends a raven, which does not return. Utanfishitim sends all the ship's inhabitants out into the world and makes sacrifices to the gods. Enlil is angry that Utanfishitim survived the flood and proposes to corrupt the human race, but Ea calms him down and convinces him to abandon his plan. Instead, Ea proposes to punish only the sinners. Enlil is convinced and even blesses Utanfishitim and his wife, giving them eternal life, and places them at the "mouths of rivers." [8] Utanfishitem points out to Gilgamesh that the eternal life he has won is his alone, and proves this to Gilgamesh by attempting to stay awake for seven days. Gilgamesh falls asleep and enters a deep sleep for six days, as a result of which he recognizes his weakness and inability to gain eternal life. Utanfishitem orders Urshanbi to prepare Gilgamesh for his return to Arach, but his wife takes pity on Gilgamesh and offers to tell him about the miraculous plant. Utanfishitem tells Gilgamesh about a plant that can prolong his days, and Gilgamesh accordingly dives into the abyss and plucks the plant. On the way back, Gilgamesh dips into a well and leaves the plant unattended. A snake accidentally eats the flower and sheds its skin. Gilgamesh mourns the loss of his last chance to gain eternal life, but finally comes to terms with it, and returns to Arach.
