The investigation of faith

שו"תThe investigation of faith
שאל לפני 3 שנים

Hello, Your Honor.

I am 17 years old, probably going to a yeshiva next year. I have had doubts about my faith for quite some time now. The doubts have scared me a lot over the past few months (maybe even a year or more), so I decided to let it go. Now I am thinking of using the time in yeshiva, along with studying, to examine my beliefs. I have a few questions for the rabbi:
A. Is it okay to go to a yeshiva in order to examine my faith and seek the truth? Isn't the Torah being used here as a crutch to dig through? I do want to study, I don't know yet if it's really for its own sake, but the lion's share of my desire is definitely to invest time in searching for the right path.
B. Why is truth relevant? I mean, I'll probably never reach the truth, I can be very convinced, but how do I know that I'm actually the one who's right? If there are so many smart people with different beliefs but there's still one truth – why do I still have to chase it? I mean, isn't simply flowing through life a great alternative to a stubborn search for the truth that I don't know if it will ever end?

A. Good question. Simply put, you are released from the army to study Torah. But if you are not sure that you want to study, there is no justification for your release from the army. On the other hand, the search is also valuable, and in my opinion it is possible to go to a yeshiva in such a situation. Either way, if you find that you do not want to study, leave the yeshiva and serve full service. B. The judge has only what his eyes see. What is incumbent on each of us is to formulate a position and change our own as much as we can. There is always a fear that I may not be right, but there is no way to reach certainty. And we are still not free to avoid the clarification itself. Just flowing is an escape and laziness. You can read Column 247 on the website here. The fact that there are smart people who hold different opinions will not get you anywhere. You are supposed to hear the opinions and arguments and weigh them yourself and come to your own position. At some point, when you come to the conclusion that your position is solidified, you can stop the obsession with searching. Just skeptical questions have no value. Real doubt definitely requires consideration.
