The investigation of faith
Hello, Your Honor.
I am 17 years old, probably going to a yeshiva next year. I have had doubts about my faith for quite some time now. The doubts have scared me a lot over the past few months (maybe even a year or more), so I decided to let it go. Now I am thinking of using the time in yeshiva, along with studying, to examine my beliefs. I have a few questions for the rabbi:
A. Is it okay to go to a yeshiva in order to examine my faith and seek the truth? Isn't the Torah being used here as a crutch to dig through? I do want to study, I don't know yet if it's really for its own sake, but the lion's share of my desire is definitely to invest time in searching for the right path.
B. Why is truth relevant? I mean, I'll probably never reach the truth, I can be very convinced, but how do I know that I'm actually the one who's right? If there are so many smart people with different beliefs but there's still one truth – why do I still have to chase it? I mean, isn't simply flowing through life a great alternative to a stubborn search for the truth that I don't know if it will ever end?
