Recommended Philosophers

Question

Hello,
I’d be glad if you could advise me about a book that, in your view, teaches logic at a high level,
Husserl? Russell? Brentano? Frege?
Oh, and I read German and English fluently
All the best,

Answer

All of those are interesting, but if you want to begin studying logic in a systematic way, go with what I sent you. There’s also Alex Blum’s book, but it isn’t easy. Leave that for the end. The two most important ones are the first two.

Questioner:
Thanks,
By the way, it seems that Husserl influenced you quite a bit, especially for someone you described as not sharp and clear……

In The Problems of Philosophy, Russell criticizes Kant pretty devastatingly, and it seems he doesn’t think much of him at all. Do you agree with his arguments there against the great rabbi of understanding?
——————————————————————————————
Rabbi:
He didn’t influence me at all. I later found some of my ideas in his writings as well (which I also did not read comprehensively).
I don’t remember Russell’s arguments against Kant. If there’s something specific, maybe I can try to address it.

Questioner:
So bottom line, the only person on the globe you actually hewed insights from was Kant, huh?
I’ll check about Russell and get back to you.
To wrap up, maybe you could give me a few names of philosophers who were great in logic (I don’t have the energy to waste time on obscure ones, like Hegel, and Schopenhauer, who just made me want to end my life……….)
And by the way, you’re a king, and you type at the speed of light
More power to you

Rabbi:
On the subject of influences, I just now wrote in response to Harari’s article about the complicated nature of intellectual influences. I assume it’ll be uploaded to the site’s responsa section shortly.

Israel:
Hello.
I’d be glad to know, if possible, which 2 books you recommend starting with.
——————————————————————————————
Rabbi:
I didn’t understand. Do you mean how to begin with logic? I’m not sure I’m up to date, since I did this a long time ago. But I recommend Irving M. Copi’s book, Introduction to Logic. And afterward, if you manage to get through Bergmann’s Introduction to the Theory of Reasoning, you can continue with it. For enrichment, it’s interesting to look at Logic for Thinkers and Computers by Polkov Avron (it has some technical computer science sections). For some reason, my recommendations to the original questioner were omitted here.
